The schools selected to participate in the first phase of the National Computational Science Leadership Program represent all socioeconomic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. Chosen in June 2000 from a national pool of applicants, the first 100 teachers selected to participate in the NCSLP represent 17 states and minority (52%), rural (68%), and low wealth school districts. The selected teams represent Alabama (3 teams), Alaska, California, Colorado, Germany (Department of Defense Dependent school), Illinois (2 teams), Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland (2 teams), Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Tennessee (2 teams), Texas (4 teams), and Washington.
