The Center for Disease Control and Prevention  has found that there was more than a 60% increase in the number of Americans who were overweight from 1991 until 2000.  During that time there was also a 49% increase in diabetes which is many times associated with obesity.  Mississippi has the highest rate of overweight people of any state in the United States.  The purpose of this module is to make students and adults aware of ways to decrease or prevent health problems such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease by changing the way they eat and exercise.   <http://www.eatrightmississippi.org/obesity.html>
