The following Jefferson County School District Science Standards are met during this unit:

• Standard 1: Students understand that science is a search for patterns in nature and that these patterns suggest broad concepts that link the scientific disciplines.
  1.1 Student will understand that patterns of organization provide useful ways of interpreting the world.
  1.2 Students will understand that most things are in the process of change and that there are patterns to these changes.

• Standard 2: Students know that science is a framework for understanding the natural world based on experimentation and logical analysis. Students understand the processes of scientific investigation and are able to design, conduct, communicate, and evaluate such investigations. Students use their understanding of science in a decision-making process.
  2.1 Students will learn science by actively taking part in the process: asking questions, manipulating materials, working as a member of a team, making observations, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and occasionally designing and conducting experiments.
  2.2 Students will communicate observations, experimental methods, under-standings, and results in a variety of ways, including mathematically.
  2.3 Students will be able to use their understanding of science to make personal decisions and decisions affecting society.

• Standard 3: Students know and understand interrelationships among science, technology, and human activity and how these affect the world.
  3.1 Students will explore the use of technology to solve scientific problems.
  3.2 Students will understand that science and technology impact their lives and the world's resources.

• Standard 6: Students know and understand common properties, forms, interactions, and transformations of matter and energy.
  6.1 Students know that matter has characteristic properties that are related to its composition and structure.
