Real World Problem

Students of all ages, grade levels, and ability levels are usually intrigued when asked to "buy in" to real world problems. The study of projectile motion lends itself to this concept.

Our unit would lend itself to other themes such as:

  • The Physics of Sports (golf ball, football, baseball, basketball, soccer ball)
  • History of Weapons (ex: catapult, bow and arrow, missiles)
  • Rockets and Satellites

Our Real World Problem

In the movie, October Sky, the hero is accused of firing his rocket into woods and causing a fire.  In our scenario, students will be shown a "newspaper clipping" that has an article about a local teen who is arrested for starting a fire in woods adjacent to a shopping center.  He states that he doesn't think his rocket could have possibly traveled that far.

His lawyer has asked for our help in clearing his client of this charge. Fortunately, the teen was with friends when he launched his model rocket so its starting position is known. In addition, they also know the maximum velocity that can be attained by this particular rocket.

  • Distance to fire starting point -
  • Maximum velocity -
