Photosynthesis Activity

Make index cards with the following on each:

Words in blue will be used each time.

(Draw the sun on one)                              Sun

Photosynthesis                                          Respiration

(Draw picture of someone’s breath coming from them)

(Draw picture of water)                            (Draw picture of sugar)

(Draw picture of oxygen tank)                 (2) Arrow

(2) +                                                           (4) Product(s)

(4) Reactant(s)                                          Chloroplast

Chlorophyll                                               Carbon Dioxide

Water                                                         (2) Yields

Glucose                                                     Oxygen

ATP                                                            CO2

H2O                                                            C6H12O6

O2

Directions: Distribute the first set of cards and have the students place the cards where they need to be according to Photosynthesis/Respiration.  Assign one side of the room to be the photosynthesis side and the opposite side of the room is the respiration side.  Have the students arrange the cards in the proper place to make the formula.  This may take them a little while to work through the process.  Then have the respiration side check the photosynthesis side to see if they are in correct order.  After all is correct on the photosynthesis side, then the photosynthesis side will check the respiration side to see if they are in correct order.  If anyone or any card is out of order, it must be corrected before continued to the next step.

Take up the first set of cards.  Remove the cards that need to be reused in the second set of cards.  Then distribute the second set of cards with the reused cards.  Try not to give the same component to the student that just had that component in the first round.  Have them arrange themselves like they did in the first round and check the other side like as before.

Take up the second set of cards (leaving the cards to be reused).  Repeat the process like done in steps one and two.

The idea is that you are going from simple to more complex.  If the students cannot figure out what they are during in the first round, let them use their notes until they understand what is taking place.

First, use the following cards:

(Draw the sun on one)                              Sun

Photosynthesis                                          Respiration

(Draw picture of someone’s breath coming from them)

(Draw picture of water)                            (Draw picture of sugar)

(Draw picture of oxygen tank)                 (2) Arrow

(2) +

Second use:

Sun                                                             Photosynthesis

Respiration                                                (2) Arrow

(3) +                                                           (4) Product(s)

(4) Reactant(s)                                           Chloroplast

Chlorophyll                                               Carbon Dioxide

Water                                                         (2) Yields

Glucose                                                     Oxygen

ATP

Third use:

Sun                                                             Photosynthesis

Respiration                                                (2) Arrow

(3) +                                                           (4) Product(s)

(4) Reactant(s)                                          ATP

CO2                                                            H2O

C6H12O6                                                                  O2
