Day 1:  Understanding Functions

Objectives:

            1.  Examine the difference between a relation and a function.

2.    Identify and describe the domain and range of special functions.

3.    Graph the transformations of parent functions.

4.  Interpret the results of the transformations, identifying the relationship between the function's graph and its equation.

Texas Essential  Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and National Standards:

Ab1A, b2C, c1B, and b1A (TEKS) and included on TAKS

1.  Computer lab with TI Interactive Software with a colored printer (if possible) or with Internet access to use the Function Flyer program; or

2.  A graphing calculator with graph link to upload to a computer or graph paper and colored pencils.

3.  Projection device to display the PowerPoint Presentation

Activity:

1.      Using Exploring Functions, a PowerPoint presentation, the teacher will guide the students through an exploration of functions, functional notation, independent variable, dependent variable, domain, range and transformations of parent functions.

2.      Using selected slides from the PowerPoint handout, the students will take notes; rewrite the equations of each of the parent and special functions in functional notation; and identify the domain and range of each function.

3.   Using the TI Interactive software, the Function Flyer Internet site, or a graphing calculator with graph link or graph paper and colored pencils, the student will begin exploring transformations of parent functions using the Transformations Lesson.
