This investigation is based in the area of Atlanta, Georgia, where
air quality, particularly ground-level or tropospheric ozone, is a
serious problem. In a recent listing
of the nation’s areas with the poorest air quality (American Lung Association State of the
Air 2002 Report), many of the metropolitan Atlanta
counties ranked near the top. http://www.lungusa.org/air2001/index.html
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division
(EPD) operates a limited number of sampling sites in the Atlanta area
and throughout the state. The red
dots indicate the EPD ozone sampling stations.
In an effort to more thoroughly analyze the ozone
levels, this study will use the data from the EPD, but will also involve
students in collection and analysis of ozone data from six additional sites ranging from downtown Atlanta to 50
miles west.
The six institutions which are participating in
this study are listed below and are shown by number on the map.
