My motivation for teaching:
Funny enough, I wrote a paper in college about this (an autobiography class). Initially, in 8th grade, it was due to a poor math teacher. I figured I could teach better than her. During high school and the first part of college, I switched to chemical engineering. At the end of college, after working for a couple summer programs, I realized that I wanted to work as a teacher with high school students - not work as a chemical engineer. Thus I am a high school teacher who does consulting work in the summer, rather than an engineer who helps with students whenever I can.

My favorite quote:
"When we try to serve or understand the world we touch what is divine. We get our dignity, our courage, our joy in work because of the greatness of the far-off and always in sight, always attainable, never at any moment attained. Service is one of the ways by which a tiny insect like one of us can get a purchase on the whole universe. If we find the job where we can be of use, we are hitched to the star of the world and move with it." - Richard Clarke Cabot (1869-1939)

And my not so favorite:
"It's Intiutively Obvious" Prof Hartley Rogers, Professor of Multivariable Calculus at MIT
