2000/2001 Leadership Program Summer Institute 2002
The 2002 Summer Institute, which concluded computational science training for the second 100 teachers participating in the National Computational Science Leadership Program, took place in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois from July 7 - 20. An opening reception at the Holiday Inn kicked off the two-week event. Daily training sessions focused on skill building, upgrading the teachers' computational science expertise, and leadership seminars centered on preparing teachers for sharing skills with other colleagues. As a continuation of their training that began with the SC2001 Education Program in Denver, Colorado (November 2001), teachers received additional instruction on the use of practical web-based tools and educational software such as STELLA, Mathematica, ChemViz, SimSurface, GalaxSee, Project InterActivate, Biology WorkBench, and Microsoft Excel. Sessions also incorporated hands-on physics, biology, chemistry, and math modeling activities. Teachers also learned how to develop web-based tools using HTML and Java in Huntsville. The 2002 Summer Institute included an educational field trip to Chicago's premier museums - Museum of Science and Industry, Field Museum of Natural History, Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum, and the John G. Shedd Aquarium. At the conclusion of the two-week event, each team of teachers presented its finished teaching model during an EXPO session. |
