What is the purpose of this activity?

The purpose of this project is to research possible solutions to the gizzard shad overpopulation problem in Big Creek Lake.  If the gizzard shad population is not dramatically decreased by 2006, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will drain the lake and poison remaining fish.  This action will ruin recreational and economic opportunities for the local community for several years to come.  Alternative solutions will be studied using mathematical models and computational science.  The solutions generated by our project will be written as a proposal to present to the DNR.
