Additional Background Information

During the 2001-2002 school year, the sophomore biology classes at North Polk High School will research and analyze the outcome of the introduction of the predatory fish.

There will be five sections of sophomore biology. One section will use STELLA , a second will use Excel, and the other three will act as control groups and will do research and complete a paper. Each class  will develop models of various solutions to determine which alternative is most efficient (fast and economical). Students will be asked to develop their projects as though they were going to present their solutions to an audience which could include judges at a technology competition and/or the DNR.

Students involved in this project will do some of their research at Big Creek in the fall. Speakers will be brought in from the DNR and from Iowa State. Research should be completed by the end of the first semester with projects being presented in the spring. Competitions (AiS and Heartland Technology Fair) involving selected presentations will take place in April and May; a presentation to the DNR will be made in May.
