    RUBRIC FOR ACTIVITY ONE AND ACTIVITY TWO

    Goal of Activity/Lesson Exceptional Adequate Below Standard Assessment
    Students will use an equation to calculate pH or H+ concentration of a substance.
    (Activity 1)
    Student scores 90% or better on the quiz. Student shows all set-ups for the problems and correctly labels each answer. Student scores in the range of 76% - 89% on the quiz. Student shows set-ups for most of the problems and labels most of the answers. Student scores 75% or below on the quiz. Student shows set-ups for a few of the problems and ignores labels on the answers Students will complete a practice problem sheet in groups. This will be corrected in class to provide feedback. Students will then take a quiz on calculating pH and H+ concentration
    Students will use EXCEL to create a spreadsheet of pH data that will also calculate H+ concentrations from pH data.(Activity 2) Student creates a spreadsheet containing data in ascending order with correct headings. Student enters the correct equation for calculating H+ concentration from pH. Student uses the program to find the H+ concentration for each substance. Student creates a spreadsheet, but the order of the data is not sorted or the correct headings are not included. Student enters an equation for calculating pH, but it contains some type of error in syntax resulting in errors in the H+ concentrations Student creates a spreadsheet but the data and or set-up is incorrect or incomplete. Student does not enter an equation for calculating H+ concentrations and/or student does not calculate H+ concentrations for all the substances in the table. Student will turn in, through email, a working copy of the spreadsheet.
    Students will create a graph of pH vs. H+ concentration. Students will interpret a relationship between pH and H+ concentration by analyzing the shape of the graph. Students will communicate this relationship and support their conclusions with data obtained in the activity.(Activity 2) Student creates a scatter plot of data that shows the correct shaped curve. Student writes conclusion that indicates the correct relationship between pH and [H+]. Student supports conclusions completely by using data and examples from activity, including a reference to the shape of the line on the graph. Student creates a scatter plot that shows the correct shaped curve. Student uses the graph to infer a relationship between pH and [H+] which is not correct. Student supports conclusions partially by using data and examples from activity. Student creates a scatter plot that does not show the correct shaped curve or does not create a scatter plot. Student infers a relationship between pH and [H+] that is not correct or does not match the information on the graph. Student does not include a conclusion in the report. Student hands in a completed Student guide to the activity, including hard copies of the two scatter plots that were created and a complete conclusion paragraph.
