The purpose of this activity is to identify common household substances as acids, bases, or neutral substances using various indicators.
The materials needed for this activity include a graduated cylinder, paper cups, red and blue litmus paper, phenolphthalein,
hydrion paper, orange juice, water, milk, lemon juice, coffee, soda, vinegar, ammonia, milk of magnesia, soap, and human salvia.
The procedure is as
- Record predictions on data table.
- Label the paper cups with the substances to be tested.
- Pour 5 ml of each substance into its labeled paper cup.
- Test each substance with red litmus paper. Record your results on the data table.
- Test each substance with the Blue litmus paper. Record your results on the data table.
- Test each substance by adding one drop of phenolphthalein to the cup. Record your results on the data table.
- Test each substance with the hydrion paper. Record your results on the data table.
- Determine whether each substance is an acid, base, or neutral. Record this on the data table.
