This module introduces physics students to techniques of computational modeling using the periodic motion of a pendulum. Beginning with hands-on investigations, students are led through spreadsheet modeling activities to a STELLA model for the period of a pendulum. This module is designed to be used by all physics classes. This project is designed for a two-week study. More time may be required if students need additional instruction in the use of the computer or some of the software.
There are resources available both on this site and at other sites to aid you in using this module.
Within this site are a sample student lab write-up (with scoring rubric),
a sample STELLA model for the motion of a pendulum and scoring rubric for students' models,
a list of national mathematics and science standards met by this module,
questions that will allow you to assist the students in experiencing the module, and much more.
