This module was developed by the SC2000 team of teachers from Wartburg
Central High School in Wartburg, Tennessee. Wartburg is located in Morgan
County, a rural county 35 miles west of Knoxville. Situated on the
eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau, Morgan County has over 150,000
acres of forest areas. The devastation caused by the Southern Pine Beetle
has dramatically altered the landscape (not to mention the economy) of the
area.
The teachers on the SC2000 team were:
- Judy Cross, technology teacher
- Dallas Davis, biology & environmental science teacher and assistant
principal
- David Staten, math and computational science teacher
- Barbara Summers, science teacher
The
development of this module would not have been possible without help from the
following:
- John L. Foltz, Forest Entomologist, at the University of Florida,
Gainesville, who served as the team's mentor in developing the mathematical
model. URL:

- National Computational Science Leadership Program Staff:
Lisa Bivenue, National Center for Scientific Applications, Chicago, Illinois
Edna Gentry, University of Alabama in Huntsville, Alabama
Bob Gotwalls, Shodor Education Foundation, Durham, North Carolina
Bob Panoff, Shodor Education Foundation, Durham, North Carolina
- Dan Summers, Consulting Forester; Michael Cross and Royce Cross, who
visited several areas in Morgan County to take pictures that illustrate the
devastation of the SPB infestation.
- Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Forestry Division for providing
information and leaflets on the most up-to-date information on the SPB
infestation throughout the state.
- Donald Ham, Department of Forest Resources, Clemson University, South
Carolina, who provided information and graphics.
