Given the three situations, select
two. Determine the best
graphical representation for the situations.
Construct the graphical representation and describe why you chose the
method. All representations must
contain the appropriate titles, labels, and legends.
A. Our parking lot has 125 parking spaces. George and Mickey went out to do a survey of the parking lot and found these numbers of cars:
BMW 10 Chevrolet 18 Dodge 8 Ford 26
Honda 22 Jaguar 3 Lincoln 4 Renault 5
Subaru 12 Volvo 8
B. Forbes magazine published data on the best small firms in 1993. These were firms with annual sales of more than five and less than $350 million. Firms were ranked by five-year average return on investment. The data below are the age and annual salary of the chief executive officer (CEO) for the 24 ranked firms.
Show a visual representation of the ages of the CEO’s compared to the median salary for each age group.
The Data: (All salaries are given in thousands of dollars)
AGE Salary AGE Salary AGE Salary AGE Salary
53 145 55 424 55 736 55 498
50 643 51 368 50 343 50 536

C. The bark of some tropical trees seems to offer protection from termites. If we could reproduce the protective ingredient from the bark, the trees that produce the resin might become a valuable resource. Experimenters investigated the effects of these tree resins on termites. The resin is dissolved in a solvent and laced on filter paper. Eight dishes are set up with 25 termites in each dish. The termites are fed paper containing the resin and a daily count is made of the number of termites surviving. Fifteen (15) days were observed, but no observations were made on days 3 and 9 because they were Sundays.
The Data:
DAY
Dish dose 1 2 4 5 6 7 8 10 11 12 13 14 15
1 5 25 25 22 19 18 17 14 13 11 11 8 8 5
2 5 25 25 23 20 17 16 15 15 13 11 11 10 9
3 5 25 25 24 23 22 20 19 16 15 11 9 7 6
4 5 25 25 23 19 17 16 14 12 12 11 11 11 10
Create a visual representation of the data. Include all of the proper titles, labels and legends as appropriate for the representation that you choose.
Also find the mean, median and mode for the data and determine the best measure of center for this set.
